CPCAN 2014 Spring Professional Development


CPCAN is partnering with the Jackson County ISD and The Institute for Trauma and Loss at Starr Commonwealth to offer a professional development to the community.

Morning Sessions: 9 a.m. - noon

A. Children of Trauma with Sarah Slamer of Starr Global Learning Network

In this training participants will learn the differences between grief and trauma and to see trauma as an experience rather than a diagnostic category. Participants will also learn how trauma impacts the brain, learning and behavior.


B. Stewards of Children with Judy Szink of CPCAN Stewards of Children is a prevention training program developed by Darkness to Light (D2L) that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for organizations that serve youth and for individuals concerned about the safety of children. It is the only nationally distributed, evidence based program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors.

C. Building Resilience in a Traumatic World with Sarah Slamer of Starr Global Learning Network

This training will explain and differentiate the terms post traumatic growth and resilience and describe their importance in working with traumatized children and adolescents. Strategies will be presented for use in work with children and adolescents to enhance resilience and encourage post traumatic growth. Post traumatic growth assessment tools will also be presented.
